Wenn die Lichtmaschine nicht nur die Starterbatterie, sondern zusätzlich eine (oder zwei) Verbraucherbatteriebänke laden soll, benötigt man einen Ladestromverteiler. Dieser sorgt dafür, dass die Batteriebänke getrennt bleiben, der Ladestrom der Lichtmaschine aber trotzdem an allen Batterien ankommt.
Früher waren sogenannte Trenndioden üblich, die allerdings den Nachteil hatten, dass ein Spannungsverlust von 0,7 - 1,3 V auftrat. Bei diesen Geräten war ein Erreichen der Ladeschlussspannung (und damit ein Vollladen) der Batterien ausgeschlossen. Die neue Generation der Trenndioden haben dank des Einsatzes von Shottky-Dioden deutlich geringere Spannungsverluste.
Wer allerdings Wert darauf legt, Spannungsverluste komplet zu vermeiden, der kommt um die Ladestromverteiler von Philippi, Phaesun und Victron nicht drumherum. In dieser Gerätegeneration wurde das Problem das Spannungsverlustes gelöst: Durch moderne MOS-FET-Technologie arbeiten die Verteiler nahezu verlustfrei, sodass die volle Spannung und der maximale Ladestrom der Lichtmaschine bei den Batterien ankommt.
